Na Pali Coast State Park, Kauai

Na Pali Coast State Park, located on the north shore of the island of Kauai, is a pristine stretch of coastline with an abundance of scenic beauty and outdoor activities. The park is located in a wilderness area of 6,175 acres (25 sq. km), which features dramatic 4,000-foot (1,219 m) cliffs that tower over the crystal clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. These cliffs, known as “pali” in Hawaiian, enclose a wild area of deep, narrow valleys speckled with gorgeous waterfalls and languid streams, as well as the remains of ancient Hawaiians who perished in the land ages ago.

For those wishing to explore the park on foot, the Kalalau Trail provides the only land access. The trail is eleven-miles (17.7 km) long and traverses through five major valleys before concluding on Kalalau Beach. Visitors who want to hike beyond Hanakapiai Valley or camp along the coast will need a permit.

Na Pali Coast Activities

Kayaking, boating and snorkeling are common on the Na Pali Coast. An exciting adventure is to explore the coast’s secluded coves and its coral reef, which is home to a stunning array of tropical fish.

There is no entrance fee for the Na Pali Coast State Park, though camping permits can be purchased for $10 per person. No drinking water is available on the grounds, and any water collected from the park’s streams must be treated before it is used. The park is inaccessible to automobiles, but many visitors choose to explore the wilderness area with a helicopter tour.
